The Truth About the iPhone 4 Siri Port [Updated]
A few hours ago a video was posted by esteemed jailbreak developer chpwn (Grant Paul) and Steven Troughton-Smith. Multiple stories from different sources have been published on a Siri port for non-iPhone 4S hardware, and this most recent video demonstrates the software running on an iPhone 4 and 4th generation iPod touch.
There have been multiple parties working on a Siri port on and off for weeks now. It’s not a new fact that the Siri UI can be run on non-4S hardware. The real magic happens when Siri is able to talk back to you…
As you can see in the above videos, Steven and Grant have been able to get Siri connecting with Apple’s server. Performance is smooth and Siri responds very quickly.
The first public evidence for a Siri port to the iPhone 4 was posted by Steve Troughton-Smith weeks ago in conjunction with Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac. A second video was posted showing performance enhancements, but Siri would still not connect with the device. Only the Siri UI had been ported, not the full package.
It’s all changed since then.
Any type of Siri port for the public is very much not ready for prime time. There’s still a lot of work to be done.
Update: This article has been heavily amended to better respect all parties involved.

When it Comes to Smartphone Displays, Does Size Matter?
Needless to say, the Cupertino company hasn’t touched the iPhone’s screen size, and I’ve always kind of wondered why. Recently I came across an article by Dustin Curtis, a designer, that offers some interesting thoughts on Apple’s reasoning…
In the post, Curtis talks about an epiphany he had while using his recently purchased Samsung Galaxy S II:
“When you first see a phone with a 4-inch or larger screen, it seems like a much better experience. I thought it was a technical decision, and it could be, but since switching to an Android phone — a Samsung Galaxy S II — 15 days ago, I have realized another huge downside of larger screens: when holding the phone with one hand, I can’t reach the other side of the screen with my thumb.”He goes on to explain that trying to touch the upper right hand of his Galaxy S II’s 4.2? display with one hand is frustrating, and nearly impossible. With his iPhone 4, however, he found that he could reach the other side of the screen without straining.
Several tech writers have picked up on the article, and it has moved them to publish their own opinions. Here’s Marco Arment on the matter:
“As a four-year iPhone user, I’ve never thought, “You know what I don’t like about this phone? The screen’s too small. I’d like to reduce my battery life, and I’d like my phone to protrude from my pocket in a larger and more conspicuous rectangle to achieve a larger screen that I cannot comfortably use one-handed. That would be completely worth it.”I agree with Arment in the fact that I don’t think I would want my iPhone much bigger than it already is. But I do enjoy the extra screen real estate on my girlfriend’s Droid Bionic when browsing around eBay and other websites.
If you ask me, an iPhone with a 3.7-4.0-inch display would be perfect. Users would enjoy the larger viewing area, and could still comfortably operate the handset with one hand. What’s your idea of the perfect smartphone screen size?

AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon iPhone Plans Compared
As soon as Apple announced October 14th as the release date for the new iPhone 4S on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, potential buyers began wondering which carrier would be the right option.
Now that AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint all offering the iPhone, everyone is looking at the pros and cons of each carrier. With that in mind, Macworld has put together a comprehensive comparison of the choices for new iPhone owners on all three US carriers…
The comparison, carried out by Macworld’s Joe Mathis, goes into the differences in pricing and tariff structure across the three carriers now offering the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S to customers.
Sprint’s lowest voice plan is $70, which is considerably more expensive than the base options of $40 for both AT&T and Verizon. But that’s not the whole story, with Sprint offering savings elsewhere.
Family plans are a very similar story. AT&T’s lowest plan comes in at $60 for 550 minutes, while Verizon’s cheapest option is $70 for 700 minutes.
AT&T also offer the same type of plan, too, should AT&T be your carrier of choice for a reason other than cost. Sprint is where things start to get a little expensive, with their base family plan coming in at a whopping $130, although you do get 1,500 minutes. Sprint is still expensive, with both AT&T and Verizon offering 1400 minutes for $90. That’s quite a disparity.
Text messaging plans are where Sprint starts to even the playing field. While AT&T and Verizon both charge 20 cents per message, all messages on Sprint are included in their data plans. Yes, Sprint’s competition does offer bundles of texts at set fees, but when you add those on, the voice plans start to even out slightly.
When it comes to data, Sprint is again the cheapest option, offering unlimited data for just $10 per month. To get the same unlimited bits elsewhere is difficult — as all other carriers no longer offer unlimited data plans.
Tethering options are also available on all three carriers.
Nobody can tell you which carrier is best for you, and the carrier you choose may very well depend on the coverage in your area, rather than price and features. If you’re on a family plan, that could also change your outlook on a new contract, so be sure to check what your current deal offers you before moving.
It’s certainly a minefield out there, but choice is always a good thing.
Let us know what carrier you decided to go with for the iPhone, and why! Are you switching carriers for the iPhone 4S?

Apple Getting Ready to Launch AirPort Utility iOS App?
It’s unclear as to if Apple will launch an AirPort Utility app alongside iOS 5, but it’s assumed that the app will see the light of day soon…
If Apple offers such an app as an optional download in the App Store, then users who don’t own an AirPort router won’t have to ever see the utility app.
AirPort routers offer speedy wireless connectivity and storage options for home networks. An AirPort iOS app would assumedly allow users to manage their router settings and access stored content from an attached drive.
Would you like to see an AirPort Utility app on the iPhone and iPad?

Steve Jobs Planned Apple’s Next Four Years Of Products Before He Left
With all the changes going on at Apple these days, like Steve Jobs stepping down as CEO and his subsequent passing, there has to be one burning question for those of us who follow the workings of the Cupertino company. What will Apple be like without Jobs?
And if we’re wondering, you can bet that those with a financial stake in the company are also keen to find out how Apple will change over the coming years…
According to one report, many of Apple’s future products have had the Steve Jobs seal of approval placed on them, with the Daily Mail discovering that Jobs personally oversaw development of Apple’s next four years of upcoming products:
“He has also been overseeing the development of the delayed iCloud project, which will allow Apple users to store their music, photos and other documents remotely and masterminding updated versions of the iPod, iPad, iPhone and MacBooks, ensuring at least four years’ worth of products are in the pipeline, according to Apple sources.”While it’s clear that Apple’s products to this point have not been the sole result of Jobs and his passion, few can doubt that his foresight and design taste have been integral to the way Apple continues to gain mind and market share in the minds of consumers.
Apple will now be relying on those Jobs handpicked to carry the company forward, with people like Scott Forstall, Phil Schiller, and their teams all acting under the supervision of new CEO Tim Cook.
All eyes will be on the Apple executive team over the coming years. Let’s hope they’re up to the job.

Tweet Speaker for iPhone Lets You Listen to Your Twitter Feed
The developers at App Cubby have created a beautiful app called Tweet Speaker to let you listen to your Twitter timeline.
This unique Twitter client effectively turns your Twitter feed into a radio station for your listening pleasure. Tweets are read aloud in succession. We may have found the perfect Twitter app for driving and leisurely catching up on tweets…
Following the announcement of Apple’s own “Siri” voice technology, it’s interesting to see an app like Tweet Speaker take a different approach to the all-too-familiar genre of Twitter apps. Like Siri, Tweet Speaker does the work for you — only in this case it’s limited to your Twitter account.
What’s great about Tweet Speaker is that it actually works. There are tons of voice-related apps in the App Store that can be a hit or miss, but Tweet Speaker definitely finds the sweet spot.
Once you’ve authenticated your Twitter account, Tweet Speaker will start queuing up tweets to read. The app is super easy to use, and there’s very minimal configuration required. There is support for Tweet Marker (a fantastic service for keeping your Twitter timeline position synced across different apps). You can also send links to Instapaper, which I love. AirPlay support lets you send audio to your big speakers when you’re at home.
The radio dial at the bottom of the app acts as your reference for where you are in your Twitter stream. You can select your main timeline, replies, or lists and then hit play to have Tweet Speaker read your tweets aloud as they come in.
The voice for Tweet Speaker isn’t customizable, but App Cubby promises that more voices are coming in future updates. For now, one voice will have to do.
Playback worked pretty well in testing. Tweet Speaker will fetch the titles for links and correctly dictate usernames and hashtags most of the time. Listening to your tweets isn’t something you’ll probably won’t to do all of the time, but every now and then it can be helpful — especially if you have a refined list of Twitter accounts you follow that you want to make sure you stay on top of.
As a Twitter client, Tweet Speaker offers a nice amount of features while keeping its focus on the voice aspect. You can unfollow/follow, reply, retweet, and swipe through tweets manually in the card-like interface above the radio dial. Everything works very nicely.
Tweet Speaker is available for $2.99 in the App Store. It’s probably not for everyone, but if having your tweets read aloud sounds like something you may be interested in, definitely give this app a try.
Let us know what you think of Tweet Speaker in the comments below!

i0n1c Confirms iOS 5 Untether is “Covered”
A tethered jailbreak is inconvenient, it means you have to reconnect your iDevice to your computer after every restart. Luckily it sounds like we won’t have to wait long for an untether to hit web, as i0n1c has confirmed it’s being handled…
If you don’t know i0n1c, you’re likely familiar with his work. The infamous hacker was responsible for the iOS 4.3.1, 4.3.2, and 4.3.3 untether. Earlier today, i0n1c told the Twitter world that the iOS 5 untether was “covered.”
“As far as I know iOS 5 untether is covered by other people already. Guess who :p”Although he wouldn’t confirm it, i0n1c was likely referring to the Chronic Dev team, the group of hackers responsible for GreenPoisOn. The team recently announced that it’s found multiple exploits for the iPad 2 and the upcoming iPhone.
Regardless of who is working on it, an untether appears to be in the pipeline. And with developers pushing out updates to their jailbreak tweaks and utilities, things are starting to look good for early iOS 5 adopters. Stay tuned.

Gameloft Hosts Columbus Day Sale, 7 Major Titles Lowered to $0.99
A little over 500 years ago, Christopher Columbus set sail on a journey that incidentally landed him and his crew off the coast of the United States. Though the details are kind of sketchy, we credit Columbus with the discovery of the Americas.
And for that reason, every year on the second Monday in October folks in the U.S. celebrate Columbus Day. But perhaps more importantly, the holiday gives game-makers a reason to host a sale. And Gameloft has gone all out for this one…
As TouchArcade reports, Gameloft has substantially dropped the price on some of its major titles. 7 of the company’s games have been marked down to $0.99, including the recently released 9MM.
Here’s a list of the games on sale:
9MM
Eternal Legacy
Eternal Legacy HD
Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus
Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus HD
Sacred Odyssey: Rise of Ayden
The Settlers HD
The sale ends Monday, so if you’re interested in any of the above games, make sure you act fast. All of the above titles typically retail for $5 or more, and you’ll rarely find games of this kind of quality under a buck.
What do you think? Deal, or no deal?

How to Get Settings for iOS 5 Jailbreak Tweaks [Updated]
Update: Video and download pulled. Apparently this file is not officially approved by the developer, and it was stolen/illegal/unlicensed. I apologize for the inconvenience, but we don’t want to wrong the hard working members of the community. I hope you understand.
One of the main reasons that people have shied away from the iOS 5 jailbreak, besides the obvious tethered nature, is the lack of settings for their favorite tweaks. This makes their favorite tweaks severely maimed, or utterly useless.
The following tutorial shows how to update your PreferenceLoader which will in turn enable settings for tweaks on iOS 5. Keep in mind that an update PreferenceLoader should be coming anyway, with the release of iOS 5 on October 12th. For those who just can’t bare to wait any longer, this tutorial is for you…
Note: Your device must be jailbroken in order to do this. You can use SSH, but it’s easier to use a file utility like iPhone Explorer if you have it.
Step 1: Download PreferenceLoader.dylib
Step 2: Navigate to /Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries on your iDevice
Step 3: Rename PreferenceLoader.dylib to PreferenceLoader.dylib.old
Step 4: Copy Downloaded PreferenceLoader.dylib (from step 1) into the /Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries directory
Step 5: Respring, and check your Settings app. A good tweak to test with is CleanStatus. I’ve verified it works personally.
Generally only advanced users would want to do this, and you will know how to transfer files between your PC or your iDevice. You can also use iFile to copy the file over, or whatever other means of file transfer that you have.
Was this tutorial able to help you get your jailbreak tweak settings? Let us know how you fared in the comments below.

Apple Has Officially Set iPhone 5 Launch Event for October 4
Apple iPhone 5 release – now it’s official at last: Invitations have been sent out for the iPhone 5 event to be held on October 4, saying, “Let’s talk iPhone”. So it is currently expected that Apple will hold its next big media event on Tuesday, October 4 when the tech giant is reported to be unveiling the next iteration of its popular iPhone.
There had been a lot of conflicting reports about the exact timing of the event. However, according to sources the Oct. 4 date has been finally selected by the company to showcase the iPhone 5. They also stated that the reason behind the selection of the October 4 date was that the company planned to make the new device available for purchase within a few weeks after the announcement.
If incase there is any doubt as to what this event might be about, the Loop actually has a picture of the invitation, which features four app icons, three of which represent the date, time and location, and the fourth of which shows the phone icon. Also there is this little sentence: “Let’s talk iPhone”, that doesn’t particularly say iPhone 5. This means only one thing – that Apple doesn’t want to give anything else away until the big reveal on October 4.
Although the iPhone 5 is a much-anticipated handset, the event itself holds much more importance for Apple than many such previous ones. That’s because it is going to be Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook’s first big product introduction which would give the public a first lengthy impression of him in his new role. Also, as he’s never sponsored an Apple product announcement before, Cook is certain to preside over this next generation iPhone rollout. During its unveiling on October 4, Apple is also expected to announce that the iPhone 5 will be available very soon which would obviously point to a mid-October launch.
While the next-generation iPhone’s design has been heavily debated, rumors indicate that it will use the faster A5 processor on which the iPad 2 runs, a Qualcomm dual-mode GSM/CDMA baseband, and will feature a higher-resolution eight megapixel rear camera. The new iPhone could be Apple’s best-selling product yet.

Is iPhone 4S Release Date Scheduled to October 2011?
Another side evidence comes from Digit-Times that was a pretty reliable source in the past. According to Digit-Times, a Taiwan based supplier is reporting a major downgrade of orders from Apple for iPhone 4 units. Apple ordered 2 million less iPhone 4 units than the first quarter of 2011. If we keep this in mind we can assume that the next iPhone could arrive by next month.
We predict that next iPhone 4S release date would be announce in October 2011. We can expect the next iPhone 4S will offer a small upgrade in hardware with the up gradation of iOS 5. Rear camera of iPhone 4S may be upgraded to an 8-megapixel resolution.
According to reports, iPhone 4S release date may be in October 2011.
So what about iPhone 5 release date? What do you think? Will iPhone 5 be named as iPhone 4S? Or will we not see iPhone 5 till next year?
Stay tuned with us to keep update yourself about latest iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 news.

Apple iPhone Event: What We Can Expect
For those who aren’t Apple fanatics, there have been back and forth rumors running wild: all claiming different and contradictory things about the next iPhone or even iPhones. Here’s a round-up of what we can expect to be announced on Tuesday.
I’ll start with the fifth-generation iPhone first because, really, this is all anyone cares about. From the rumors, there seems to be a possibility of one of two announcements. First, we might only see what is being dubbed the “iPhone 4S”. Many pictures of parts have leaked to the web pointing to an updated version of the iPhone 4. Improvements for the 4S are suspected to be the faster A5 chip, an 8 megapixel camera, and possibly 64GB of internal storage. The form factor would stay the same to the current iPhone 4 and probably have the same screen size.
The other possible announcement, and what everyone is hoping for, is the arrival of a drastic redesign the Internet has dubbed the “iPhone 5”. This would come alongside the iPhone 4S. The new form factor is what separates the 4S from the 5, even though it is technically the fifth iteration of the device either way. The iPhone 5 would also feature the A5 chip and an 8 megapixel camera. However, it would have a teardrop shape with tapered edges. The new phone would also be wider and have an edge-to-edge screen. Recent rumors from China Unicom point to the device having HSPA+ technology, sometimes called “4G”, which would bring data speeds up to 21 megabits per second.
There is no solid evidence currently available that points to the iPhone 5 announcement on Tuesday. However, case manufacturers in China have already produced millions of cases in the teardrop design, which would suggest that they have high confidence in a redesigned iPhone. The rumored release date for the new phone or phones is October 14th.
Personally, I don’t think Apple would push the release date of the next iPhone back 4 months from its usual summer release for a slight 4S upgrade. That’s an easy way to anger consumers. Besides, there are many Android devices that have surpassed the iPhone in specs and Apple needs to step its game up to stay competitive.
Aside from the iPhone, Apple will also most likely take the opportunity to announce some changes to its iPods. For one, a small refresh to its iPod Touch line will most likely occur. Expect a white model and a 128 gigabit model too. Additionally, a slight Nano refresh is also probable. On the other hand, it appears that the iPod Classic and Shuffle will be axed. Today, consumers want devices that are very functional and these two devices are mainly used to play music. The Touch would replace the Classic as the flagship iPod.
Despite all my rumor mongering, we really won’t know for sure what’s coming until new CEO Tim Cook has left the stage. For Apple’s sake, I hope we get the iPhone 5. I’d expect major repercussions in the form of verbal violence and lower stock prices if consumers’ hopes and dreams fail to come true.
