Untethered Jailbreak Works With iPhone 4 Running iOS 5.0.1

Here's some more good news for jailbreakers, especially iPhone 4 users. pod2G has just confirmed that he has successfully performed an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4 running on iOS 5.0.1.
Couple of days back pod2G who has been a member of the Chronic Dev team had demoed an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 on an iPod touch but had hinted that it should work on iPhone 4.
However, few minutes back he has confirmed that he has managed to successfully perform an untethered jailbreak even on an iPhone 4 running on iOS 5.0.1:
Got an untethered iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1. Feel free to update.
Of course, if you want to SIM unlock, don't update using Apple's original FW nor update OTA.
As pod2G has mentioned, please do not update your iOS 5.0.1 if you rely on a software method to unlock your iPhone.
pod2g hasn't provided any ETA on when the tool to jailbreak iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1 (untethered) will be released to the public. It remains to be seen if pod2G's untethered jailbreak will support iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.
As always, we'll let you know as soon as we have any further updates, so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or join our Facebook Fan page or follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our RSS feed.

Apple Planning to Add Bluetooth 4.0 Support For AirPlay

Japanese Mac blog Macotakara (via AppleInsider) reports that Apple is planning to add Bluetooth 4.0 support to its AirPlay wireless protocol.
Macotakara reports that Apple announced at MFi Technology Summit 2011 in Shenzhen that ended on Friday that it will be releasing a new certification chip for MFI (Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod touch) devices that will allow future AirPlay products to connect to iOS devices via Bluetooth 4.0.
Apple's AirPlay wireless protocol allows users to stream media content using Wi-Fi technology to AirPlay compatible devices like Apple TV from an iOS device or computer. The low power consumption of Bluetooth 4.0 makes it an excellent alternative to Wi-Fi especially for iOS devices.
By allowing its AirPlay wireless protocol to work over Bluetooth, Apple is expected to expand AirPlay wireless devices market by several times and create opportunities in the healthcare and gaming industry.

Apple added Bluetooth 4.0 support in iPhone 4S, Mac Mini and MacBook Air that were introduced this year. In fact, iPhone 4S that was launched two months back was the first smartphone in the world to support Bluetooth 4.0.
As Rounak had noted few months back:
New standards, however good they might be, need a major player to back them for mass adoption. Believe it or not during the media format war between VHS and BetaMax, VHS survived only because of porn industry's backing. Similarly, Apple's backing can play a huge role in the survival or death of a certain standard.
It looks like slowly but surely, Apple seems to be doing it for Bluetooth 4.0.

Apple Gets Network Access Permit For iPhone 4S In China; Launch Imminent

Couple of weeks back we had reported that Apple had received an approval for iPhone 4S  from Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) - the state agency in China that regulates the Internet and wireless communications. But they had to wait for the network access permit to start selling their new iPhone in the country.
M.I.C Gadget now reports that Apple has received the network access permit for iPhone 4S.
M.I.C Gadget reports:
the 4S had cleared the required MIIT regulatory hurdles and the device obtained a three-year valid Radio Transmission Equipment Type Approval Certificate (RTETAC), which is one of the requirements for getting MIIT’s network access license. The model submitted for testing was compatible with GSM, WCDMA, HSDPA / HSUPA, Bluetooth, and WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure).
M.I.C Gadget reports that Apple and China Unicom's, Apple's iPhone carrier partner in China, are hoping to launch iPhone 4S this month.
the iPhone 4S has finally been granted the permit, and China Unicom is now expecting to launch the device this month. The company told Chinese news website Sohu that the preparation work for sales channel, staff training and network testing is completed. They will try their best to make the iPhone 4S’s arrival official by Christmas and New Year.

M.I.C Gadget reports that China Unicom expects the 16GB iPhone 4S to be available for 4,999 yuan (approximately $789) without contract, which is more expensive than US prices, where a 16GB iPhone 4S is available for $649, but cheaper than India where the entry level iPhone 4S is available for approximately $875.

Redsn0w Will Soon Allow You To Downgrade Using iOS 5 SHSH Blobs

Back in June, iPhone Dev team had revealed in a blog post titled "Blob Monster" that Apple has made it difficult to downgrade to an older firmware using SHSH blobs in iOS 5.
However, earlier in the week - iH8sn0w - developer of jailbreak tool Sn0wbreeze released an updated version of iFaith to add support for dumping iOS 5 SHSH blobs, which unlike TinyUmbrella allow users to downgrade to an older version of iOS if they had dumped SHSH blobs with the apticket using iFaith.
It looks like it is going to be soon possible to downgrade using SHSH blobs saved using TinyUmbrella, according to a series of tweets by MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev team.
Upcoming redsn0w release makes both TinyUmbrella and Cydia blob saves useful for 5.0+ (1st verifies, then stitches)
For time being, please just use most recent TU to save 5.0.1 blobs+APTicket…redsn0w will do the rest, should you need to restore.
MuscleNerd hasn't provided any details of how it will work nor has he provided an ETA on when the new version of Redsn0w will be released, but as he has recommended it is a good idea to take SHSH blobs using TinyUmbrella, which is available for both Mac and Windows or iFaith.

Rumor: Next Generation iPad Will Be Available In 3-4 Months

According to Taiwanese publication DigiTimes, Apple will launch the next generation iPad in 3 to 4 months.
DigiTimes reports that according to their sources in Apple's supply chain, the production of parts for iPad 3 has already started ramping up, while production of iPad 2 has declined.
DigiTimes reports:
OEM production of iPad 2 will remain high at 14-15 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011 but decline to 4-5 million units in the first quarter of 2012, paving the way for the launch of the new iPads, the sources noted.
According to DigiTimes' sources in the supply chain, the production of the new iPads is expected to reach 9.5-9.8 million units in the first quarter of 2012.
Apple is expected to launch the third generation iPad with Retina Display towards the end of March or early April based on the yearly product cycle. To get some perspective: the Wi-Fi version of the original iPad went on sale in the United States on April 3, 2010, while iPad 2 has been available for purchase since March 11, 2011.
So March-April timeframe is good guesstime for the availability of iPad 3. However, according to one analyst, the next iPad will be available in February.

Apple Loses Appeal, Samsung Allowed To Sell Galaxy Tab 10.1 In Australia

The Apple Vs. Samsung lawsuit has come to an interesting point. Apple has lost its appeal in Australia, allowing the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to be sold.
Not too long ago, the Australian court lifted its ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Then, in the US, Apple lost their bid to halt Galaxy series phones and tablets.
Now, the Australian high court has rejected Apple's appeal on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. PCMag has reported on Samsung's press release.
"The Full Court of Australia decision on November 30 clearly affirmed our view that Apple's claims lack merit and that an injunction should not have been imposed on the Galaxy Tab 10.1," Samsung said.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 was slated to launch back in September, but Samsung volunteered to delay the launch in light of the lawsuit, which claimed Samsung blatantly copied Apple's iPad tablet. The overturning of the ban should give a big boost to Samsung as they will at least be able to sell the Galaxy Tab before Christmas shopping season ends.
Apple's had a hard time with some of its patent wars recently, especially considering Motorola Mobility's recent win in the German courts. It'll be interesting to see if this will follow in the other countries where Apple has made patent infringement claims.
